You can decide to either become a medical assistant (MA) or a certified medical assistant (CMA). This certification exam is offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants. The exam can be taken three times a year. This certification is only valid for five years and must be renewed once it expired. Certified Medical Assistants with this certification gives them more job opportunities and option than compared to medical assistants.

Roles of a medical assistant can vary depending on the place of work and entry level position. A typical day in a medical assistant’s life consists of medical record keeping, checking in patients for their appointments, filing charts, taking payments, record and update medical history of patients. Some experienced medical assistants will take blood and administer shots for the nurse. This is a skill that has been taught in a medical assistant school setting as well as in an externship. Other tasks also include working with medical billing and sorting out sincere coding, which many certified medical assistants have learned in medical assistant school.

In medical assistant school they may or may not inform you of how the work schedule of a medical assistant is like. The majority of medical assistants has a 40 hour work week. The average medical assistant works Monday through Friday, however that is dependent on where you work. Hospitals require more hours and may have very erratic schedules depending on the amount of demands the hospital requires.

Once you leave medical assistant school you will be able to find a job that you like, as there are plenty of options to work with. This is due to the fact that medical assisting is considered one of the most versatile allied health care professions. You can work to improve patient care or you can work with the clerical or administrative side of the job. The only drawback of being a medical assistant is the lack of upward mobility. In order for you to move up in the ranks, you will be required to return back to school to pursue further education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assistants’ median pay was about $29,370 annually in 2012. However, the growth for this occupation is expected to increase much faster than average by 29% from 2012 to 2022.
